Jeanefer Jean-Charles is a freelance choreographer, movement director and Artistic Director of Tomorrow’s Men an organisation established to tackle antisocial and behavioral issues in young men through dance.
From 1990 until 2000 Jeanefer was the artistic director of Bullies Ballerinas Jazz Productions. Following a 20 year performing career, working across theatre, dance, television and film she has gone on to work extensively in a range of contexts both in the UK and internationally. Specialising in Jazz and Lindy Hop, Jeanefer has experience choreographing many different styles for a range contexts and bespoke events.
More recently Jeanefer has choreographed for The Young Vic, London; Queens Theatre, Hornchurch; Kinetica (a carnival company which produces work for large outdoor events); The British Ski Ballet Team; The Sychronised Skating Team; Newcastle-upon-Tyne Winter Carnival; among others.
Other choreography/movement direction work includes; The Parent Trap (Walt Disney); Barefeet and Crazy Legs; Unilever Conference and most prestigiously for Big Dance 2006 (produced by the London Mayor’s Office and the BBC) in which 800 dancers broke the world record for ‘The Largest Number of Different Dance Styles Dance to One Piece of Music’ involving 44 different styles.
Jeanefer is currently working as an advisor for The Big Dance and last year choreographed Bolero Remixed, a large scale outdoor event, as part of Big Dance 2010 in partnership with Greenwich + Docklands International Festival and East London Dance.
Tomorrow’s Men
Following the completion of her Rayne Fellowship, Jeanefer has set up Tomorrow’s Men, which works with young men who are disengaged from society by engaging them through dance activity. The organisation was established following research and discussions with the Metropolitan Police (Operation Blunt and the Diamond Initiative) and Youth Justice System among a range of social service providers and is building projects and partners across London and the rest of the UK.
Tomorrow’s Men is currently developing a large scale participation project in partnership with East London Dance and Greenwich + Docklands International Festival for The Big Dance 2012.
